Gwen Stefani’s Chola Influence!

Since coming out with No Doubt‘s Tragic Kingdom album in 1995 and sporting pencil brows, lined red lipstick, “wife-beaters” and Dickies, Gwen Stefani has been an unofficial Chola-cheerleader. But now the 47-year-old Revlon global ambassador has opened up about her beauty influence at an exclusive event in NYC.

“I never left the ‘States till I was 21, then I got to travel the world,” said the gorgeous mom of three, showing off her age-defying figure in a bodycon black dress and boots. “I love other cultures, but I was most influenced where I grew up in Anaheim, two hours from the Mexico border. The girls in class would use a safety pin to separate their three-week-old mascara. It was amazing.”

Earlier in the year, the singer-fashion designer also gave props to her chola influencers, telling WWD that “Chola girls … had unbelievable makeup” and she was “mesmerized” while watching them use their cosmetics in class.

We’re happy that Stefani, who has long been criticized of appropriating Latina and Japanese culture, is recognizing where her beauty look comes from.

At the event, the recently divorced Stefani also spoke candidly of her painful divorce from rocker Gavin Rossdale.

“I just remember thinking, ‘What is my gift? Why am I here? What is my destiny? What is my talent and how am I going to use that? I remember driving down Santa Monica Boulevard, crying my eyes out going, ‘What am I doing? I’m going to the studio, I’m going to torture myself.’  So I turned to music, and I wrote a record,” she said.

Currently, Stefani has healed from her heartbreak and found love with country hottie, and fellow cast-mate on The Voice, Blake Shelton. “I chose to make something good out of something bad. That’s what we’re supposed to do, we’re supposed to choose love,” she said.

She also said that she’s happier than she has ever been, sharing important insight: “I would say if you could just look at yourself, you’re always gonna find something to be grateful for. If you find gratitude, you’re gonna find peace.”
