Travel: The “UnHamptons”

People have been singing the praises of the North Fork for years now: the wineries, the farm stands, the conspicuous lack of crowds. We trolled these fabled farmlands from Riverhead to Greenport and rounded up the coolest things to do right now:

Stargaze in a vineyard One Woman Wines & Vineyards hosts Tasting Under the Stars every Saturday through October 12 from 6 to 10 p.m. Visitors sip on Gruner Veltliner (the only Gruner produced on Long Island) as they peer through a telescope. Watch a movie alfresco–August is Bond month–while the kiddos sit around a bonfire and make s’mores. 5195 Old North Rd., Southold; 631-765-1200

Lunch at a gourmet food truck The renowned North Fork Table & Inn is the place for a white-tablecloth dinner, but if you’re just passing through between 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., go behind the restaurant and join the locals lined up at the joint’s gourmet food truck. Stop by for a McCall Ranch grass-fed-beef ricotta meatball sandwich, a lobster roll or pastry chef Claudia Fleming’s insane chocolate-chip cookies. 57225 Main Rd., Southold; 631-765-0177

Pick up original hostess gifts Peconic River Herb Farm’s 14-acre waterfront nursery and garden is filled with refurbished furniture, vintage watering cans and other housewares. Be sure to take home some of their handcrafted seasonings and spices–we’re partial to the cinnamon-infused “toast topper.” 2749 River Rd., Calverton, 631-369-0058
